Rust Lust: Bar Decor

Our cat Hannibal enjoying her new fave hangout

What’s this? Actual furniture and proof that people live in my appartment? Well this just can’t be, because anyone who knows me and has step foot in our place knows that in the Wilkos/Toure household we have serious commitment issues…with our decor choices.

Well all that has changed ladies and gents, because this weekend the paint will be chosen, the bed will be bought and the much needed attention to detail will finally happen in our NDG flat! I decided to jump the gun a bit and fix up the bar first, since I do enjoy a nice shower then drink after a long day at school/work. This first post on the delightful decor to come should clue you in on the vibe were going for….INDUSTRIAL! It’s a clear choice for us since monsieur is KING for all things vintage and industrial (he designs custom antique lighting and furniture…truly jack of all trades WILKOS ELECTRIC ). I have been absolutely won over by the style, though there have been an argument or two over how much rust is too much.

The pieces were not all found in 1 day of course, when it comes to industrial/antique it’s not always easy finding the pieces to fit you’re decorating puzzle (especially since this trend is picking up steam, the prices can burn you from time to time). As always all great things take time but for now enjoy the post with the pics from the pieces we found and stay tuned for more decor blog posts to come!

Info for pieces featured at the end of the post.

BHM at NYFW. All Black Everything

NYFW has come and gone and while we’re all still sifting through the beautiful collections of designers and dreaming up new additions to our wardrobes, I will be adding additional musing to my mood board. No, not a specific collection or material or cut, but color….BLACK. Yes black as in ‘All Black Everything’ a la Jay-Z, and wearing black in order to help lead a more colourful life. But the most important reason that Black has such a powerful presence to me this month is of course Black History Month.

While yes I am appreciative that we have this month to look towards our past in order to gain perspective for our future. We must never forget, that our history no matter where it might originate from, can in no way be summed up in one month. Read More »

Sensational Siblings: Olsen Twins Top Vogue’s Best Dressed 2011

The always fantastic, inspirational and fashionable Olsen sisters topped the list for Vogue’s Best Dressed List! How is this their first time toppign the list is beyond me, but I for one am thrilled about it, I wasn’t on board for Blake Lively being on the cover last time. Give me oversized, baggy and eccentricly chic Olsens to too short, too tight Ms. Lively any day of the week. These girls have intense street cred, with their covetable labels The Row and Elizabeth & James the Olsen Twin fashion empire is forever growing and making women look fashionable all over. Any way enjoy the pics from their beautiful blown out shoot.

The full list:
2. Dakota & Elle Fanning (love them too, super cute!)
3. Claire, Virginie, Jenna and Prisca Courtin-Clarins
4. Ruby and Lily Aldridge
5. Poppy and Cara Delevingne
6. Bianca and Coco Brandolini
7. Beyoncé and Solange Knowles
8. Charlotte Gainsbourg and Lou Doillon
9. Pippa Middleton and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge
10. Kate and Rooney Mara

The Spirit of A Hustler & The Swagger of A College Kid

This blog post isn’t just a regular street style one, it’s my attempt at opening a dialogue about something that has sparked my interest, and is deeply important to me; the world’s view and opinion on African-American’s in the fashion community. While I hate to say this, and I’m sure many of you will deny, I can’t help but be bothered by what I heard during MTL & NYFW. A group of fashionable people, talking about the outfit of one the attendees (who just happened to be black), ‘Wow! That’s a great outfit for a black guy!’ and ‘Huh, I really like what he’s wearing!’ as if to be surprised that someone within the black community can pull off something other than a pair of tight leggings and cropped bomber jacket with high tops. While I am in NO WAY saying, that everyone thinks that way, I do however hope that this post can show the world, that we all don’t dress as extras in a Lil Wayne video. We’re all different, we all have different taste and if the Nicki Minaj, Beyonce and Pharell’s of the world haven’t educated you in our changing fashion sense then hopefully this post will. I’m not about to hate on anyone who enjoys their high tops as much as I enjoy my high heels, I’m just asking everyone to keep an open mind about fashion! Don’t categorize us gangsters, black hipsters or fashionable for an African-American. The African-American community has always had a huge impact on fashion, we’re just switching things up people, so try and keep up!

Huge THANK YOU to Maciek Wilkos for being the amazing photog who snapped these pics!

Lookbook Love: Cynthia Rowley Resort 2012

Cynthia Rowley's fantastically colorful Lookbook

I am really enjoying Cynthia Rowley’s Resort 2012 lookbook peeple! With a collection that already has such strong vibrant colours (as well as crisp whites and basic blacks), pairing it with a beautiful painting in the background just helped round out and compliment the entire collection! Oh and of course ladies and gents one cannot forget to mention how cute those shoes are and yes, that black zipper bag has my name on it. This collection is a great mix between decadent ‘look at me’ colors and keeping it casual whites, this people is how you do a lookbook that has people begging for more!
